Bags of fun at Kirkburton Library reopening

A refurbed Kirkburton Library reopened on Saturday 29 July, with a family fun day, and the summer rain did not stop the community flocking to be a part of the special occasion.

The makeover included new windows and external doors, new flooring, and electrical works throughout.

The day was filled with lots of activities which included live percussion workshops with ‘dumalou,’ face-painting from ‘Artifaces’, and a special performance from the Dewsbury Ukelele band. There were plenty of arts and crafts activities where visitors could design a tote bag and make their own pin badges. There was also a giant Jenga and miniature golf for people to enjoy too once the rain clouds moved over for the sunshine that followed. Refreshments were kindly donated by the Friends of Kirkburton Library, volunteers, and library staff.

Kirkburton Library has been at the heart of the local community since the 1800’s when it was simply a reading room at Dogley Chapel. It was in the 1950’s when librarian, Miss Dorothy Saul ruled the facility, then located in the centre of town, imposing strict rules and silencing children with a glaring look! During the 1980’s, the community was served by a mobile library, locally known as “The Farm Van” because it served the rural communities too. It was in 1994 when the current purpose-built library was commissioned and opened by the Council.

In May 2015, a special memorial board was unveiled at Kirkburton Library, dedicated to the men of the town who went into battle during World War I. Following research by the Local History Group, a second board was created to remember the women who worked at the Kirkburton Auxiliary Military Hospital, based at the Kirkburton Drill Hall on Shelly Lane in November 1915.
